Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) or Polycystic Ovarian Disorder (PCOD) is a medical problem, if undiagnosed it can affect a woman’s menstrual cycle, hormones, heart, blood vessels, appearance, even her ability to have children. With PCOS, women usually have high levels of androgens (though they are called male hormones, in this case the females also make them), irregular periods and many have small cysts in their ovaries.
The main reason for PCOS is unknown. Treatment is based on your position whether you want to be pregnant or lower your chances of a heart disease and diabetes. Though, in a few cases both are required. Then a set of treatments have to be combined.
Ways To Treat Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (Pcos)
First you have to modify your way of life as many PCOS women are overweight. For this, healthy eating and exercise is important. Limit use of processed food and foods with added sugar.
Take in more whole grain products, fruits, veggies and lean meat. Apart from low blood glucose levels, the body’s utilization of insulin will also improve. A mere 10 per cent of weight loss will give you a more regular period.
Birth Control Pill
Second is taking birth control pills (for those who don’t want to get pregnant). This controls the menstrual cycle and reduces androgen levels. Spironolactone, Flutamide are among the other drugs that can be administered. These drugs contain Gonodotropine that contains FSH (Follicle stimulating Hormones) and LH (Lutenizing hormones) that helps in regular ovulation.
The third is Diabetes medication. Metformin is used to treat 2 types of diabetes. It does help PCOS symptoms, though it is not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) for use. The treatment of PCOS using Diabetic drugs is called as Endocrino-pathy.
On administration of Diabetic medications like Insulin there are certain chabges that occurs drastically on the body. This includes lowering of the hypertension, obesity and triglycerdehyde level. There is an increase in the level of pituitary gland activity that elevates the the mechanism of action of the clotting factors.
The fourth is Fertility medicine. Lack of ovulation is one of the major reasons of infertility in this trouble.
There are several medications that stimulate ovulation and help PCOS women to get pregnant. These drugs includes clomiphen, letrozole, follistim
The fifth is ovarian drilling or surgical procedure. This also increases the chance for pregnancy but this is only done after the fertility medication ceases to work.
Using advanced laser technology the ovary is drilled at 10 to 12 locations. This helps in reduction of the level of other hormones.
PCOS is a problem that arises in child bearing age in women. Rare cases are of girls as young as 11 being affected with PCOS. Though the main reason for its arising is still unidentified, some experts consider it even genetic. Anyhow, once you have been diagnosed with this problem, you should begin your treatment at once. Follow the do’s and don’ts given by your medical doctor. Healthy diet, exercise, right medication and taking care of yourself will definitely give you relief from this serious problem.
