Breast implants have become quite common nowadays. These techniques are adopted even by the younger girls for enlarging their breasts to look attractive. Although, breast implants increase the size and volume of the breasts, they also carry some potential health risks. Health risks associated with breast implants should be understood well in advance before considering them.

Some of the risks related to breast implants are very severe and hence they should be taken up as the last option for breast augmentation. Some major health risks of breast implants have been discussed below in brief.

6 Major Health Risks Of Breast Implants:

1) Breast Pain

Almost all the patients experience pain in the first few weeks after the breast implant surgery. But some patients may continue to experience pain in their breasts. Pain can be occasional or mild. Some patients may feel mild discomfort whereas others may experience constant sharp pain in their breasts.

2) Capsular Contracture

Capsular contracture is considered to be one of the most common risks associated with breast implants. When breast implants are made, scar tissues usually develop surrounding the implants. In some patients, the scar tissue formed as a result of breast implants can compress and squeeze the implants. This often results in hardening of the tissues around the implants, which might cause tight feeling in the breasts. Breast pain is also experienced by the patient.

Scarred tissues can hamper production of milk and can also reduce the efficacy of the mammograms and breast-health screenings. This can cause a cancerous breast tumor to go undetected.

3) Loss Of Sensation

Women undergoing breast implants may feel a change in sensation or completely lose sensation in their breasts. In a clinical study, it was found that nearly 10% to 18% of the breast implant patients did not feel any sensation in their nipple area even after 5 years of their breast implant surgery. Loss of sensation in the breasts can negatively affect the sexual life of the patient.

4) Risk Of Infection

In absence of proper care, breast implant surgeries may also result in infection. Infections usually occur within a few days or weeks after the surgery. Some common signs of infection may include breast redness, fever or pain. If you have undergone breast implant surgery then you must consult your surgeon immediately after observing any of these signs of infection.

5) Rupturing Of Implants

Doctors often recommend their patients to get their breast implants replaced every 10 or 15 years. This is because implant in the body for a longer duration can cause the implants to rupture and cause several health problems to the concerned patients. Implants can also rupture due to a severe blow to the chest area. In this condition, a saline implant ruptures and becomes flat. Hence, it is easily noticed and treatment is provided to the patient. But in case a silicone implant ruptures, you may not be able to notice it for several weeks, months or even years. Most experts believe that a ruptured silicone implant can cause severe damage to the patient’s health.

6) Other Health Risks

Formation of blood clots, excessive blood loss, necrosis, hematoma, bruising, shock and leakage of a silicone implant are the other common health risks of breast implants.
