A common ailment that can affect anyone, irrespective of age or time, cough is especially rampant during the cold winter months.
A simple cough that surfaces once in a blue moon may not be all that serious. However, if the cough lasts for months and is chronic, one needs to take note of the warning signs.
Serious respiratory tract infections could be underlying which needs to be taken care of. Such cough can be the result of diseases like tuberculosis or cancer of the lungs. Chronic cough can also be due to habits like smoking, GERD, asthmatic conditions and adenoids and polyps in the nasal passage. A host of refreshing remedies exist for treating cough at home.
Natural Treatments For Cough
One of the best solutions for cough, ginger works by making the body hot and melting the phlegm. It is also an antibacterial and can remove the viral and bacterial action that could have caused the cough.
Take ½ “ ginger and extract the juice from it. Add half a teaspoon of honey to it and consume 4 times a day. This is a remedy that can be safely administered even in children.
The antimicrobial properties of onions too are great for treating cough. Onions help in removing and melting the sputum and relieving the respiratory tract from distress, thereby easing the breathing.
Squeeze out the juice of onion to make one tablespoon of onion juice. Add half teaspoon of honey to it and consume 4 times a day.
Lemon juice has properties that can dry the phlegm due to cough. Take a small lemon and squeeze the juice out. Add one small sized onion along with the juice and crush it. Boil this along with 8 ounces of water.
This can be taken four times day along with honey for removing the bacterial action and also the phlegm associated with cough.
Turmeric being a medicinal plant with antiseptic qualities can be used for treating cough. The root of turmeric has to be first fried and then crushed to form powder. About 3gms of this medicinal powder can be taken every day twice to remove cough.
Add a pinch of turmeric powder to a glass of warm milk and drink this twice a day. This too is a tried and tested remedy for relief from cough.
5. Herbal Tea
A herbal tea made from a combination of powerful herbs can help in relieving cough in a day or two. Try this. Crush two cloves of garlic and 1” piece of ginger and squeeze half a lemon into it.
Boil these with two cups of water. Simmer for 15 minutes. Before drinking, add a teaspoon of honey as well and take it 3-4 times a day.
Pepper too is a phlegm loosening agent and helps in relieving the chest congestion and nasal blocks that could be creating a breathing difficulty in the person suffering from cough.
For adults, chewing a few peppercorns will do the trick. They can also be added with milk or water to get the same effect.
