7 Home Remedies For Treating Thrush During Breastfeeding

Thrush is a very common yeast infection of the mouth, mostly found in breast feeding mothers and babies. It can affect others too. Thrush appears when the yeast in our body grows out of proportion.

As infection can be passed on from mother to baby through breastfeeding, it is important to keep the disease under control and prevent transmission. Most of the time antibiotics are resorted to for treatment which may not give the desired result. It can also aggravate thrush.

A number of home remedies are known to be very effective in treating yeast infections and thrush. These home remedies are completely safe and can be administered on babies as well.

Home Remedies For Treating Thrush

1. Salt Water

Salt is an antibacterial and cleansing agent. Take a cup of water and add one teaspoon of salt to it. This can be used for swishing your mouth several times a day. Keep the water in the mouth for 5 minutes every time you use it. This will decrease the yeast infection and finally remove it completely. Make sure you do not wash your mouth or eat anything for half an hour after this to increase the effect of salt.

2. Yoghurt

The live cultures in yoghurt help in fighting thrush effectively. Take at least two cups of fresh and unsweetened yoghurt every day to fight thrush. Again leave the yoghurt in your mouth for maximum time for the yeast to be removed completely.

3. Flax Seeds

Flax seeds are high in omega 3 fatty acids and hence great for treating thrush. Take 2 teaspoons of flax seed oil every day or better still, chew 3-4 teaspoons of flax seeds every day to remove the yeast infection from your system and also to prevent further episodes of T.

4. Garlic

Garlic has antimicrobial qualities that can kill yeast infections. Take 2-3 cloves of garlic and chew lightly. Swish it around the mouth for about 5 minutes and allow the juice to touch the areas of yeast infection for a few minutes as well. You can also slice a garlic clove into half and rub it on the infection for a few minutes. Doing this on a daily basis will help in removing thrush in a few weeks.

5. Onion

Just like garlic, onions too can be used for treating thrush in the mouth. All you have to do is to rub onion slices on the infected area inside the mouth and also chew onions as often as possible, allowing the juices to remain in the mouth as well to discourage the yeast from progressing and exerting its action.

6. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil in its purest form is the best treatment for babies and mothers suffering from thrush of the mouth. Take coconut oil that is unrefined and apply on the nipples before breastfeeding the baby. This will prevent transmission of thrush to the baby. If the baby already has thrush, you can remove it by smearing coconut oil in his mouth.

7. Grapefruit Seed Extract

Take one ounce of water and add 10 drops of grapefruit seed extract to it. Drink this and also apply on the nipples and inside of the baby’s mouth before and after feeding.
