PCOS is the acronym for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. As the name suggests, the condition is seen in women who do not experience ovulation in their bodies. A healthy woman ovulates every month on the 14th day of her periods. In case of women with PCOS, this ovulation does not happen at all because of various reasons.
Since ovulation is absent it is difficult for a woman to become pregnant. Medical survey has shown that every two in ten women suffer from PCOS. There are many women who are not even aware that they suffer from the condition because they do not know the symptoms of PCOS. Women realize that they have PCOS when they are unable to conceive after trying for long time.
A regular visit to a doctor can turn into harrowing experience when the cause of infertility is PCOS. It is a well known fact that women with PCOS take longer to conceive and have to undergo many tests and trails in order to get pregnant. Even after all the medical treatments a woman may fail to conceive.
How to Get Pregnant with PCOS?
Many people tend to believe that a woman with PCOS can never get pregnant. This is completely false and utterly ridiculous. A woman can conceive with PCOS if she takes good care of her diet and nutrition and also gets medically treated in time. There are cases of women who have given birth to healthy children even after being diagnosed with extreme polycystic ovarian syndrome. By following simple day-to-day practices a woman suffering from PCOS can get pregnant.
The first thing to do is to bring down your weight. Women with PCOS are often overweight because of the hormonal imbalance in the body. This fat makes their body unhealthy and therefore unable to conceive despite all the treatments. Losing even five per cent of the body’s total fat can also increase the chances of getting pregnant despite PCOS. Overweight women are also at greater risk of developing gestational diabetes; a condition that is seen only in pregnant women.
Inculcate healthy eating habits. Include plenty of nutritious food in your daily diet. Avoid eating foods that will increase your weight or cause internal harm to your body. Women who eat a well-balanced diet are likely to conceive sooner than women who eat unhealthy foods.
Do not indulge in carbonated drinks and food products made from white flour. Also avoid using too much oil or butter for cooking your food. Use only olive oil or mustard oil as these keep the weight in check and also help keep cholesterol at normal level.
Don’t Stress Yourself
Avoid unnecessary anxiety and stress. Get yourself treated for depression if you show the symptoms for the condition. A healthy mind and positive attitude is very important for getting pregnant. If you are stressed out at work or at home then you will find it very difficult to get pregnant. Some women also keep thinking negatively about their condition thus bringing down their chances of conceiving.
Give Up Bad Habits
Lead a healthy lifestyle by giving up on smoking and excessive drinking. It has been proven in studies that women who smoke and drink find it difficult to get pregnant even if they do not suffer from PCOS. Women with PCOS should give up on cigarettes and alcohol because they are as it is harmful to their condition. Also avoid drinking too much caffeine if you want to conceive. Coffee along with sugar releases the hormone prolactin that is often responsible for miscarriages.
Eat lots of proteins and vitamins in the form of fruits, vegetables, eggs, soy and meat. Eating nutritious food will not only help you conceive but also make your baby healthy and strong. However, do not get your nutrition from tinned vegetables and fruits as they have preservatives that are harmful during pregnancy.
Get a thorough medical check-up done for any ailments. Many times women with PCOS suffer from one nutritional deficiency or the other. Get treated for these deficiencies by use of supplements.
You doctor would prescribe you iron, calcium and vitamin supplements to make the body strong and healthy to support the fetus.
Follow Doctor’s Advice
Women with PCOS suffer from hormonal imbalance and need to be treated for this if they wish to become pregnant. Hormonal imbalance in women with PCOS causes the body to produce large amounts of testosterone. This is a male hormone that is found in traces in a healthy woman. However, in women who have PCOS, this hormone is present in abundance making it impossible to conceive. Women will conceive once the medicines start taking their effect.
Check with your doctor about your chances on becoming pregnant once you start the treatment for PCOS. Your doctor will let you know about the days on which your chances of conceiving increase. You will be asked to take note of your body temperature throughout the day. Basal temperature plays an important role in deciding a woman’s chances of conception. Besides a suitable body temperature, four days before the date of the ovulation is also considered the ideal day for conceiving.
Be Regular with Treatment
Take your medications regularly for treating hormonal imbalance in the body. Under no circumstances should you miss the medication as it can take your body back to where it started from.
Treatment for PCOS
To treat PCOS doctors generally prescribe Metformin. The treatment with metformin lasts for about six months and then other treatments are begun.
Clomid is another medication that is used in the treatment of PCOS. Your doctor will let you know the dosage and the days on which Clomid should be taken. This medicine helps regularize the cycle of menstruation so that women can ovulate successfully despite PCOS. Some doctors also advice HCG injections to help with ovulation every month.
Once your periods become regular your doctor will discuss with you ways in which you can successfully conceive. One such way is intrauterine insemination. This method increases the chances of fertilization of the egg by semen.
