Loose or watery bowel movement is referred to as Diarrhea. It is a common condition which sets in due to various factors and ceases in a day or two. Basically, when we eat something, the food passes through our colon. Here, the liquids from the food are absorbed thus leaving the semi solid stool to pass through and finally be cast out of the body. However, if the colon fails to absorb the liquids they pass out as watery bowels.
Diarrhea is often classified into various types. However, it generally happens because of bacterial or viral infections, parasites, food intolerance and reaction to medicines. Even intestinal diseases play a big role in the occurrence of diarrhea in people. Let us delve deep and discuss the various causes of diarrhea at length.
Reasons Of Diarrhea
Rotavirus, Norwalk, viral hepatitis and cytomegalo virus are some of the common virus/bugs which set off diarrhea in people. These are similar to bacterial infections and cannot be cured by the usage by antibiotics. A proper medication and diagnosis is required to eliminate the viral cause leading to the condition.
Parasites And Bacteria
Contaminated food often leads to diarrhea (food poisoning) as they transmit harmful parasites and bacteria into our system. Salmonella, campylobacter, Escherichia coli and shigella are some of the common bacterial forms which bring in this condition. Bacterial diarrhea is most common in developing nations and is referred to as “Traveler’s Diarrhea”. Food left open often becomes home to these disease causing microbes and hence make sure that you avoid the same.
Medicines as antibiotics may lead to diarrhea. Antibiotics are known to destroy bacterial cells but they do so indiscriminately, thus harming the good bacterial cells as well (required by the body). The natural imbalance of good bacteria’s thus caused, often leads to the condition. In-fact, the loss of good bacterial cells triggers the rise of other harmful bacteria’s and parasites thus aggravating the situation.
Fructose And Artificial Sweeteners
At times, people find difficulty in digesting fructose and artificial sweeteners. Fructose is natural sugar found in honey and fruits, which often cannot be digested well by people thus leading to diarrhea. On the other hand, artificial sweeteners used in chewing gums and other sugar free products can cause the same condition to crop up even in healthy people.
Lactose is a common term associated with milk and dairy products. It is a sugar form found in all dairy products. Our body is known to produce an enzyme to digest this lactose content right from the time of childhood. But with the passage of time, this enzyme count often decreases thus causing indigestion problems. This intolerance of lactose is also one of the many causes leading to diarrhea.
Irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, microscopic colitis and ulcerative colitis are some of the intestinal disorders which lead to diarrhea.
Apart from the ones mentioned above, diarrhea can also set in because of excessive alcohol consumption, bad food habits, too much intake of coffee and anxiety.
