Also called as bacterial vaginitis, bacterial vaginosis is one of the most common vaginal infections experienced by women of all ages. Bacterial vaginosis usually occurs when the balance between the good and bad bacteria in the vagina is altered. Accordingly, the vagina would have a certain amount of bacteria present in it at all times. And vaginal infections including bacterial vaginosis occur when the levels of these bacteria increase to abnormal levels.
Bacterial vaginosis is often mistaken for another kind of vaginal infection called candidiasis (yeast infection). Although the symptoms are similar for both conditions, there are a few subtle signs that can help differentiate them. Accordingly, while yeast infection would cause abnormal vaginal discharge and itchiness in the vaginal area, bacterial vaginosis would cause a fishy odor discharge which would not be accompanied by other symptoms like itchiness or inflammation.

Although the symptoms of bacterial vaginosis are mild and can be treated easily, they can cause more serious health related issues if not treated immediately. So if you start noticing signs of bacterial vaginosis in your vaginal area, here are some really effective home remedies that you can adopt for the same.

Yogurt and garlic are considered to be the best natural remedies for bacterial vaginosis. Both these remedies contain antibacterial properties that help to tackle the infection and prevent recurrences as well.
You can either add yogurt or garlic to your existing diet or apply them directly on the vagina. Douching with garlic or yogurt would also help flush out the bad bacteria from the vagina and hence curb the symptoms of bacterial vaginosis.
A healthy, balanced diet rich in vitamin C and other nutrients would help you treat bacterial vaginosis effectively. Accordingly, you can opt for foods like fresh fruits, green leafy vegetables, lean meat, fish, poultry, and flax seed oil that could help prevent the symptoms of bacterial vaginosis from recurring. Make sure that you avoid foods like processed sugars and flours, and stay away from caffeinated products, saturated fats, and alcohol.
Make it a point to drink plenty of water and fresh fruit juices. In addition to keeping your body hydrated, these fluids would regulate the urinary tract and repeatedly flush out the harmful bacteria present in the vagina, thereby preventing the infection from spreading further. Vitamin C would increase the acidic content of the vagina and so would make it unfavorable for the harmful bacteria to thrive under highly acidic conditions. So opt for citrus fruits that contain high levels of Vitamin C.
Avoid wearing tight undergarments or clothes that could trap moisture and cause the infection to spread further. Opt instead for light, airy cotton undergarments and clothes that would prevent moisture from collecting in these places. Make sure that you rinse your clothes properly while washing them. Detergents used to wash clothes tend to leave residues that can cause infections if the clothes are not rinsed properly.
Make it a point to use a mild detergent to wash your clothes. Soak previously worn undergarments and clothes in hot water for about 10 minutes before washing them. Bacteria would not be able to survive under very high temperatures and so the chances of them causing infections via your clothes would diminish when you soak the latter in hot water.
Excess moisture in the vaginal region would aggravate the infection and cause more serious problems. So make it a point to keep the area moisture free but adequately hydrated. If you tend to sweat profusely, then use wipes to dry the area at regular intervals.
You can also opt for medicated anti bacterial powders (or normal powders as well) to remove excess moisture from the vaginal area. Applying some powder in and around the vagina would keep the area dry, thereby preventing the infection from spreading.
Practice Good Hygiene
Bad hygiene is often considered as one of the foremost reasons for bacterial vaginosis. So make it a point to practice good hygiene, especially when using the bathroom or toilet. Bacteria cannot survive under warm-hot conditions. So opt for warm baths over showers.
Clean the vaginal, cervical and pelvic areas properly with a mild soap or body wash while bathing or after using the toilet. In the case of bowel movements, make sure to clean the area properly afterwards. Always wipe from front to back in order to prevent the flow of bacteria from the anal region to the vagina.
