Conjunctivitis also known as the pink eye in lay man’s term is the inflammation of the conjunctiva which is the thin membrane that covers the white portion of the eye and the inner portion of the eyelids.

It may be caused due to a virus or a bacteria, dirt and dust, cigarette smoke or factory fumes. The symptoms include pain, itching and irritation in the eye, redness, blurred vision and continuous discharge of sticky fluid. This infection is highly contagious especially if it has been caused due to bacteria or virus. If the infection is not very severe, several home remedies can help to cure it.

Effective Home Remedies For Conjunctivitis

Chamomile

This flower has been used extensively for treating conjunctivitis. Moist tea bag of chamomile can be placed on infected closed eyes for about 10 minutes few times in a day. The water in which the tea was made using chamomile tea bag can also be used to wash the infected eye to reduce the pain redness and swelling.

You can also use dried chamomile flowers. Boil about one spoon of flowers in water. Cool the water and use it to wash the eyes. It can also be used in the form of compress.

Flowers like marigold and jasmine has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Tea prepared from marigold tea bags can be used as a compress on the infected eye. It helps to heal conjunctivitis.

Jasmine flowers are used to prepare eye drops for conjunctivitis. Jasmine flowers should be placed in water and left for about 24 hours. The water should be then strained and used as eye drops.

Potato is very useful in treating conjunctivitis as it has anti-inflammatory properties. Potato can be used as a poultice over the eyes or grated potatoes can be used as pack on the infected eyes. Potatoes when used continuously for 3-4 days help to reduce inflammation, redness and pain.

Honey has anti-bacterial properties and helps to cure conjunctivitis. Honey can be used either directly in the eyes as drops or three spoons of it can be boiled in two cups of water, cooled and used as an eye wash.

This should be done few times in a day for effective results. It is possible that this method will lead to burning sensation but will give good results too.

Diet

Food rich in vitamin A and B2 should be eaten to heal conjunctivitis. These vitamins are found in milk, butter, yogurt, almonds, fruits and green leafy vegetables. Juices of certain vegetables are also effective in healing conjunctivitis. 200ml of carrot juice mixed with 300ml of spinach juice helps to reduce the inflammation of the eyes.

Diet

Carrot juice can also be mixed with raw parsley leaves for better efficacy in treatment. Indian gooseberry juice mixed with few drops of honey also helps in curing infection.

Boil few coriander seeds in water and allow it to cool. Strain the seeds and use the water as an eye wash for the infected eye. About two spoons of turmeric powder can be added to warm water and used as a compress to heal the infection of the eye.
