Hangnails are nothing but flaps of dead skin that get detached from under our nails and hang ominously. Hangnails though not a serious problem are a great nuisance. 1. Using Emollient Cream Before Nail Scissors

You need to moisturize before clipping off the hangnail. A suitable remedy for this is using emollient cream. Rub a generous amount of the cream on the affected area and then wrap it tightly with plastic. This becomes a makeshift bandage which prevents the hangnail from ripping off in the night too! The plastic helps the moisture to spread and makes it easier to clip off the nail the next morning.

2. Don’t Bite Or Pull Off Hangnails

You should never tear off any hangnail. Hangnails are often attached to some part of living tissue. If you tear it off, you may rip off this tissue too and that will lead to blood and pain. This will in its turn lead to more infection which just causes further problems. So do not rip off hangnails.

3. Using Nail Scissors

The best way to get rid of hangnails is to clip them off with good nail scissors. However hangnails are exceptionally dry so clipping them off with nail scissors, sometimes cause as much pain and trouble as biting it off does. So before you start clipping off your hangnails you need to moisturize them by soaking your hand in a bowl full of water.

Clipping them will be even easier if you add olive oil to the water before soaking your hand in it. The best method is to add four caps of bath oil to warm water and soak your hand in this solution. Also, sometimes after you have clipped off the hangnail the area proceeds to get infected. Thus, you should put any antibacterial cream or paste available to you after clipping off the hangnail and then cover it with a clean bandage.

4. Hand Soaking Mixture

The first step to prepare this mixture is to whisk three eggs in a bowl till it’s a well blended mixture. Now add two cups of olive oil to the above mixture. You can use soybean oil in place of olive oil. After you have mixed the oil with the mixture add to it the juice of half a lemon.

Now heat this mixture in a pan till it’s sufficiently warm. Then pour it back into the bowl and soak your hands in it for at least 20 to 25 minutes. This mixture moisturizes your hand well and makes it easier for the hangnails to be clipped off. It also prevents the formation of new hangnails.

5. Salt Water

After clipping off the hangnail there are a number of other things that you are required to do. Mix one tablespoon of salt in one cup of water. Now keep soaking the infected finger in this solution at regular intervals of one hour. This removes any chance of further infection from occurring.

6. With Cream And Use Gloves

If you want to treat hangnails, use as much of moisturizers as you can. Hangnails occur mainly due to dry skin so make sure that you use appropriate amounts of cream every day to not worsen your condition and to also prevent the occurrence of further hangnails. Wear rubber gloves while washing dishes or executing other tasks which calls for your hand to be under constant contact with water for long periods.
