Cervical cancer is a malignant cancer caused by human papillomavirus. It affects the neck or lower part of the female uterus called the cervix. Generally spread through sexual connection, it begins in the body as a precancerous form called dysplasia and develops slowly as cervical cancer.
The precancerous form of this disease is highly treatable and in case dysplasia changes are undetected, it can advance to cervical cancer and spread to other organs as well.
Symptoms of Cervical Cancer
Women who have many sexual partners or girls who became active sexually since young age are at high risk for developing cervical cancer. Besides, females who smoke, use tampons, condoms or birth control pill have higher chances of developing this cancer. The symptoms of cervical cancer may start to appear when the abnormal cells grow. Following are some of the common symptoms of cervical cancer:
Unusual Vaginal Bleeding
The most common symptom of cervical cancer is abnormal vaginal bleeding. A healthy normal cervix may have small quantity of bleeding. Women with this disease have bleeding after intercourse, during menstruation or have spotting between periods. A sudden and unusual vaginal bleeding may be the symptom of cervical cancer and you should consult a physician immediately for examination.
Frequent and Foul Smelling Vaginal Discharge
Vaginal discharge is common among women. The cervix of a woman produces mucus for fertility purpose. However, if you observe frequent and abnormal vaginal discharge, it may be a sign of cervical cancer. Women with this kind of cancer can have thick, watery or foul smelling vaginal discharge.
Many women experience severe pain during menstruation. However, pelvic pain may be a sign of cervical cancer. The pain is felt between the hipbones in the lower part of the abdomen. Women with cervical cancer suffer from sharp and constant pelvic pain.
It is wise to go for a check up if you have pain during your urination. Women who are in the advanced stages of cervical cancer can have difficulty in urinating. Besides pain, there may also be blood in the urine. In the advance stages, the urinary bladder is attacked by cancer cells that lead to blood in the urine.
In the advance stages of cervical cancer, there may be blood in the feces and pain during defecation. At this stage, the disease spreads into the rectum which causes pain.
Women with cervical cancer may have loss of appetite that leads to weight loss. You don’t like to eat anything with loss of appetite and lose body weight considerably.
Pain during Intercourse
It may be a symptom of cervical cancer. Women with this cancer feel unusual pain during their intercourse.
Even though fatigue may be a common symptom of many other diseases, women with cervical cancer feel tired and stressed all the time even after enough rest.
The slow growing cervical cancer is a kind of malignant cancer. Sometimes the above symptoms may also be due to infection or other health problems. However, it is always a wise step to consult a doctor and get check up done for the same.
