Gout is a disease characterized by tender and swollen joints due to inflammation. In about fifty percent of the cases the metatarsal-phalangeal joint at the base of the big toe is affected. Joints of knee, wrists, and fingers may also be affected. When too much uric acid builds up in the synovial fluid around the joints and crystals of uric acid are formed it results in Gout. The deposit of these crystals in joints, tendons and surrounding tissues made them inflamed and cause pain.

Gout is caused due to levels of uric acid in the body which are higher than the normal levels. This may happen when the body makes excess of uric acid or is not able to get rid of the uric acid properly (under excretion of urate).  The reasons may be diet, lifestyle, genetic predisposition, medical conditions, medications which are diuretics and rapid changes in uric acid levels.

Over a period of time the high levels of uric acid in gout may result in hard painless deposits of uric acid crystals known as tophi, which may further lead to bone erosion. The crystals may also be formed in kidneys resulting in stones and finally in urate nephropathy. Hence it is very important to take some action. Medicines have a temporary effect which goes off when you stop them moreover they have many side effects that is where home remedies come to our aid. When the attack subsides the levels of uric acid can be lowered through lifestyle changes and other home remedies.

Cherries contain natural flavonoids which have anti inflammatory properties, they stop the enzymes which swell the tissues and also help in reducing the uric acid level. Potassium of which cherries are a rich source turns the hard urate crystal into liquid form which can be easily eliminated by urination.

The vitamin C in it helps to provide relief from gout too. Have it in the natural form or as an extract. Avoid taking it in the form of juice with added fructose corn syrup as it increases the uric acid.

Having sufficient water is the most important remedy as water is required to dilute the uric acid and to easily facilitate the kidneys to flush it out. When gout is due to the purine from alcohol, it causes dehydration which may further worsen a gout attack, water helps to hydrate the system and provide some relief.
