Rhinorrhoea is the medical term for runny nose, derived from the latin word “Rhin” meaning “from the nose” and “Rhia” meaning “a discharge or flow”. Much to our surprise, there are about 200 or more viruses that can be responsible for a common cold and the most contagious is the rhino virus.

You can even try a mixture of ginger juice, honey and turmeric for instant relief. You can take a mixture of ginger powder and jaggery to cure your runny nose.
Garlic is loaded with antiseptic, medicinal, anti-bacterial and antispasmodic properties. Hence, it is a good and effective remedy for curing runny nose.
You can prepare a solution by adding three to four garlic cloves, about a teaspoon of onion juice and little salt to a cup of boiling water. Drinking this solution at least twice a day helps in clearing your respiratory tract and curing runny nose.
Taking lemon juice in a glass of warm water twice daily is a great way of treating runny nose.
The citric acid present in lemon improves the body’s immunity and cures runny nose effectively. For more effective results you can even add some ginger juice and honey to it.
Lady finger has a high content of mucilage that reduces the throat swelling and irritation during cold. Simply boil lady finger in water for about five to seven minutes and drink the concoction twice daily till the symptoms of cold subsides.
Turmeric is another effective home remedy for runny nose, especially for the babies. Turmeric preheated on a stove for about a minute should be taken along with hot milk.
This should be taken twice daily especially before going to bed. The smoke from the heated turmeric helps in clearing the nasal congestion. Alternatively, breathing in the fumes of turmeric sprinkled on coal, helps in clearing the blocked nasal passages.
It is very important to keep yourself hydrated while you are experiencing a cold. This ensures that the sinuses remain moist and immune to infections.
It is advised to drink warm water throughout the cold. You can even try gargling with salt water. It is very effective in curing cold. Warm water helps in soothing the throat irritation.
Taking steam is an excellent way of treating cold. A steam of eucalyptus oil helps in providing instant relief from cold. It helps in clearing the blockages and facilitates easy breathing. These are some of the handy home remedies in treating runny nose.
Important thing to note is that while in cold, you need to take good rest and also have a proper diet. It is advised to eat foods rich in Vitamin C as its deficiency leads to cold easily. If the symptoms worsen, it is best to consult a physician.
