How To Alleviate PMS Symptoms

PMS is an abbreviation for Premenstrual Syndrome and has been defined as an aggregate of all types of symptoms that are experienced by women before the onset of menstrual cycle.

Various symptoms that are normally reported with respect to PMS are cramping, bloating, irritability and depression. Apart from these, pain in joints also occurs. A woman feels as if she has become tired. This type of feeling is mostly accompanied by frequent change in mood.

Other symptom reported is tenderness of breasts. Though a woman may suffer from some or all symptoms mentioned above, these affect life of a woman greatly and thus, must be treated. There are many ways in which these symptoms can be treated or alleviated.

How To Alleviate PMS Symptoms

One of the easiest and commonest ways of alleviating PMS Symptoms is consumption of medications. Non Steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are commonly prescribed in these symptoms. For example, many gynecologists prescribe ibuprofen to their patients for getting relief from PMS symptoms. If cramping or pain becomes severe, it is better if these medications are followed by use of heating pad.
By increasing intake of calcium also, PMS symptoms can be alleviated.

In a study, it has been found that many of the symptoms mentioned above can be reduced up to 50% by consuming 1200 milligrams of calcium everyday. There are many food substances which are rich in calcium and can be consumed for reducing the symptoms. For example, milk and meat are two such sources.

If needed, calcium supplements can also be consumed. Similarly, by increasing intake of vitamin E, symptoms like tenderness of breast can be alleviated considerably. Healthcare providers recommend that a woman must consume 600 International Units of vitamin E for getting relief. By increasing intake of magnesium also, tenderness of breast can be reduced.

Another way of reducing PMS symptoms is regular exercise. Many types of exercises, including fun exercises, can be done for reducing the symptoms. Regular exercising also helps in reducing stress.  In case, a woman use to suffer from breakouts during menstrual cycle, she must start administering salicylic acid some days before the start of cycle. This helps in preventing breakouts during menstruation. However, if breakouts occur during the cycle, benzoyl peroxide can be applied.

By consuming diuretic drugs also, symptoms of PMS can be alleviated. This is because intake of these drugs helps in elimination of excessive water, which, in turn, helps in reducing bloating. Similarly, consumption of alcohol and caffeine should also be reduced few days before start of menstrual cycle. Increased consumption of caffeine leads to tenderness in breasts.

Since alcohol is a depressant, it should not be consumed. By reducing the intake of sodium also, most of symptoms of PMS can be prevented. Since deficiency of vitamin B-6 can also lead to onset of PMS symptoms, a woman must start consuming it few days before menstrual cycle. Symptoms of PMS can also be avoided by deferring major decisions and stressful conditions. As a woman suffers from frequent changes in mood, major decisions should not be taken. Otherwise, irrational decisions may be taken.
