Dizziness in pregnancy is quite normal. Hardly would you find a woman who has not experienced this symptom during her term. The normal blood flow in your body gets retarded to some extent causing a sudden drop in the blood pressure resulting in dizziness.

You feel a reeling sensation in your head as if you will drop down unconscious. Severe dizziness can make you faint. According to the American Pregnancy Organization, this is prominent in anemic women and those suffering from varicose veins. Low blood sugar levels caused due to increased metabolism during pregnancy can also result in dizziness.

This symptom can also be felt in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. Dizziness during pregnancy is not at all a serious concern. In case of ectopic pregnancy, dizziness is often accompanied by palpitation, blurred vision, bleeding and abdominal pain which calls for immediate medical attention.

Slow Down Your Movements

You may feel dizziness as soon as you get off from your bed early in the morning. This is one of the common symptoms of “morning sickness” in pregnancy. Get up slowly from your bed. Your body undergoes some cardiovascular changes during pregnancy that affects the normal blood circulation. Relax and give some time to your body to adjust to the different changing postures instead of hurrying.

Your body metabolism increases during pregnancy and you need to supply a steady fuel to cope up with the increased metabolic rate. Eat nutritious food in small portions whenever you feel hungry. Long hours of starvation will lower your blood sugar levels giving rise to dizziness.

Blood collects in the lower limbs due to prolonged sitting or standing posture. When you stand from the sitting position abruptly, your body takes some time to get back the normal blood flow to the heart. As a result, your blood pressure drops causing dizziness. Working women should take short walks in between their sitting hours to maintain a steady blood circulation.

If your job demands long hours of standing, walk in a slow pace frequently. Shift your body weight from one leg to another while standing for a long time. Keep a seat beside you to rest in between the standing hours. You can also arrange for a seat in the kitchen to rest while carrying out kitchen chores.

When you lie on your back in the second or third trimesters of pregnancy, the developing fetus exerts excessive pressure on the inferior vena cava, the vein responsible for circulating the blood from the lower portion of your body back to the heart. The inferior vena cava and the pelvic veins get compressed reducing the blood circulation which in turn results in dizziness. It is always advised to lie on the left as this position enables maximum blood flow into the heart providing quick relief from dizziness.

Have Enough Iron Rich Foods

Anemia is a vital cause for pregnancy dizziness. Pregnancy demands enhanced blood circulation, and the fewer number of red blood cells in anemic women fail to provide the necessary oxygen to the brain giving rise to dizziness.
