Many women suffer from PMS or premenstrual syndrome which can cause a range of uncomfortable symptoms like cramps, depression, mood swings, bloating and nausea.
Bloating is very common just before the start of the period and is characterized by weight gain, severe water retention and a feeling of fullness. This happens due to the sudden surge in hormones just before the start of the period. The bloating generally disappears once the periods have started.
Easy Ways To Get Rid Of Bloated
The best way to beat bloating and water retention is with the help of aerobic or cardiovascular exercise which gets the blood pumping, increases circulation and helps to flush out the excess water from the body.
Aim for at least 20 minutes of moderate activity, which will help you feel better. If you are also feeling tired and fatigued then do some yoga or meditation, which can help to alleviate the symptoms.
Salt or sodium increases water retention in the body so go slow on the salt. Eat less salt or avoid salt completely until the symptoms of bloating diminish.
Make sure you take plenty of water just before the onset of your periods. This too will increase your urine output and help to get rid of the excess water. Aim for at least 8-10 glasses of water. Say no to caffeine and alcohol.
Avoid taking caffeine like coffee and colas, which tend to increase bloating and water retention. Consuming these will worsen your bloating and make you feel very uncomfortable.
One way of minimizing the feeling of fullness is to eat leas and eat more frequently. Take 5-6 small meals a day.
Eat healthy and make sure you consume plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and fibre, which will keep your body healthy and your hormones at an even keel.
Make sure that you supplement your diet with adequate amounts of calcium. Calcium is known to reduce water retention and swelling in the body. Take an extra 500mg of calcium for best results.
In case your bloating is severe, consult a doctor who may prescribe some low dose diuretics to help flush out the excess water from the body.
These medications work by allowing you to urinate more often thus flushing out harmful toxins and water from the body.
Wait It Out
If your bloating is mild, do not fret. Simply wait it out, as it will eventually taper off as you approach your period date.
Once the period starts, you will find all your clothes fitting you all over again and you will be able to go about your daily chores in a hassle free manner.
Make sure you increase the intake of fibre. Fibre allows you to feel fuller, last longer without actually adding to the pounds. The fibre will also release sugar slowly, and will not make you feel as if you have overeaten.
Avoid Gassy Veggies
If you are suffering from PMS bloating, avoid eating veggies which give you gas like cauliflower, cabbage and red kidney beans.
