Calcium deposits in the breast tissues are known as breast calcifications. The large white dots, known as macrocalcifications, dispersed randomly in the breast tissues, occur in one out of every two women over 50 years of age. They are less common in younger women.
Macrocalcifications are considered benign. Although small calcium deposits, also known as microcalcifications, are rarely signs of breast cancer, occasionally the calcium deposits appearing in clustered patterns might indicate presence of cancer cells in the breast.
Breast calcifications might be prevented by maintaining the health of the breast tissues. A healthy lifestyle might reduce the risk of developing breast calcifications that in some cases might be the sign of early breast cancer.
Ways To Prevent Breast Calcifications
Regular Breast Examinations
Regular screening for breast calcifications and cancer might arrest development of calcium deposits in the breast tissues. The precancerous or early cancer cells could not be detected through breast self-examinations. They could be identified only through mammograms.
The risk of developing breast calcifications that are signs of breast cancers might be prevented through regular moderate activities. According to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center studies, regular moderate physical activities could reduce the risk of breast cancers by at least 10 percent. Moderate physical activities include brisk walking, jogging, running, swimming or cycling at least for 30 minutes, five times a week.
Reduce Estrogen Level
Excess estrogen hormone circulating in the body increases the risk of breast calcification. The risk of estrogen imbalance is especially higher in older women after menopause. Hormone replacement treatment undertaken to avoid the bothersome side effects of menopause might increase the risk of microcalcifications.
Besides the ovaries, a small amount of estrogen is secreted by the abdominal fat cells. Excess accumulation of fats tissues in the abdomen might boost the estrogen level in the body. Breast calcification might be prevented by impairing fat build-up in the abdomen. Moderate physical activities and a balanced diet might inhibit formation of abdominal fat.
In addition, performing exercises that target the abdominal muscles might prevent accumulation of fatty tissues in the belly. Plant estrogen entering the body through diet might mimic human estrogen. Although the exact effect of phytoestrogen on breast calcification is unknown, limiting consumption of phytoestrogen rich plant products might protect the breast tissues from the harmful effect of excess estrogen circulating in the body.
Limit consumption of soy products. Avoid consuming milk and dairy products made with milk of hormone fed cows. Meat of hormone fed animals might expose the breast tissues to excess estrogen.
Protect Liver From Toxins
The excess estrogen in the body is broken down in the liver. An ailing liver could not eliminate the extra estrogen from the body, thereby increasing the risk of developing breast calcification.
To restore the normal functioning of the liver, limit alcohol consumption. Avoid consumption of processed foods. Organic foods are best for the health of the liver. Devoid of toxic chemicals, they can increase the effectiveness of this vital organ of the body.
Certain herbs and herbal supplements might prevent breast calcification. Burdock root, red clover and nettle juice might prevent development of benign calcium deposits.
