Acne scars can cause varying degrees of disfiguration on the skin. Whilst there are many limitations in treating indented scars, pigmented scars like a dark acne scar is easier to treat with the right approach. Dark acne scars can be a little stubborn as they are the result of lesions that took longer time to heal and which could have been constantly picked. Try these remedies for treating dark acne scars.
Ways To Remove Dark Acne Scars
Skin lighteners help in breaking down the melanin concentration on the acne scar and finally the acne scar will be several shades lighter than it originally was. Lightening creams with vitamin C, licorice, arbutin etc. are known to help a lot.
Hydroquinone is another effective treatment method for inhibiting melanin production. However, if you have decided on using hydroquinone make sure that you don’t have a sensitive skin as it can be very harsh on the skin.
Chemical peeling is another competent treatment for acne scars that are dark. In this procedure, salicylic acid, trichloroacetic acid, glycolic acid etc. are used to remove the damaged and dead skin on top. Several layers are thus removed and the darkness of the scar is considerably reduced with each peel. Depending on the severity of the acne scar, chemical peels can be planned with varying strengths to get the desired result.
Dermabrasion is the process in which the top layers of skin are sloughed off using an abrasive material so that new skin growth is encouraged. The epidermis and some portions of the dermis are removed with the help of crystals or sand particles which are used for the abrasive treatment. Dermabrasion treatment can again be mild or deep. Deep dermabrasion demands more time for recovery and is very aggressive as well. In a manual dermabrasion procedure, the dermatologist sloughs off the top layers manually using silicone carbide sand paper.
Natural Methods to Remove Dark Acne Scars
Vitamin E encourages cell regeneration and hence helps in removing the dark scars with frequent application. Vitamin E can be applied and massaged gently into the skin for a few minutes. It is best to leave it overnight so that the skin gets enough time to absorb the oil. Massaging also helps in improved blood flow and softening of the scar tissue.
Chamomile and Lemon
Take 1/2 cup of boiling water and add two tablespoons or one chamomile tea bag to this. Squeeze out the juice of one lemon and mix with this. Using a cotton ball, dab the chamomile and lemon solution on the acne marks. Lemon and chamomile will help in soothing your spirits and will also bleach your skin so that the dark acne spots are reduced to a great extent.
Flax Seed Oil
Rich in omega 3 fatty acids and vitamin E, flax seeds too encourage cell growth and hence must be consumed on a regular basis when you have scars that are stubborn. Intake of flax seeds will help in good circulation and flow of blood to the skin and this will prevent bacterial infection as well.
