Dry scalp leads to itching and dandruff, causing a lot of irritation along with it. Treating dry scalp is fairly easy and doesn’t involve any drugs or doctors.
All you need to do is change some of your washing habits and start using some of the ugly looking, horrible smelling mixtures which your grandmother or mothers ask you to use. Here are a few methods which might help you face your problem.
Effective Natural Cure For Dry Scalp
Oil Treatment
Oil treatment helps rejuvenate your scalp and supplements the lack of oil in it. Oils help increase hair growth by providing your scalp with important nutrients which help it grow long and strong. Lavender and peppermint oils are used for cleansing and soothing the scalp while cedar wood oil helps in hair growth.
For oil treatment, you need to warm 2-4 tbspns of olive oil, depending on the length of your hair. You may add essential oils for accelerating the healing process but it is not a requisite. Warm the oil and then gently dip your fingers in it. Massage your scalp with it and slowly work your way down your hair. This treatment not only reduces the dryness of your scalp but is also calms your nerves.
Change Your Washing Habits
Dryness of the scalp is caused majorly because of lack of oil in your skin. When you wash or shampoo your hair, you strip your scalp of the oil accumulated on it. So wash less. Also use cold or warm water and not scalding hot. Hot water burns your scalp making it drier. If you are unwilling to give up your hot showers and replace them with cold ones, lukewarm water will do too.
Your problem may also be related to your shampoo. It may be too strong for your scalp, so try changing your shampoo for a while too. If you cant imagine not washing your hair regularly, make a dry shampoo and use that. Or use some of the rinses that have been mentioned here.
Homemade Mixtures You Can Use
Here is a home mixture which you may use to wash your hair. Mix together quarter cup of mild baby shampoo, half tbspn of olive, avocado, jojoba, almond oil, a few drops of lavender, patchouli, Cedar wood or juniper in half a cup of distilled water. Store this mixture in a container and use whenever you wash your hair.
Acidic Washes
Another helpful home remedy is to wash your hair with acidic tonic. Lemon juice or beer will work great. The acidity of these substances restores the ph level of your scalp and rids it off any extra calcium which may have accumulated there. Vinegar can also be used for this purpose.A vinegar rinse is very helpful in overcoming the problem of a dry scalp.
Mix 1 cup of vinegar with 1 cup of boiled or distilled water in a container. Pour the rinse on your hair. Use as much as is required to coat the entire length of your hair. Let it stay for a while and then wash your scalp thoroughly. If your hair is coloured, do not use vinegar. Use lemon juice instead.
Dietary Changes
Drink as much water as you can. Keeping hydrated at all times is very important if you are trying to get rid of dry scalp. Take in a lot of vitamin e. This means including oils like Flax seed oil, evening primrose oil, fish/cod oil in your diet.
But if your diet already includes oils and fatty fish like salmon, there is no need to supplement with these, for too much of fat is harmful for the body.
