Pregnancy can be both a blissful experience and a tiring journey at the same time. While the thought of a giving birth to a sweet little angel can make you delirious with joy, the thought of having to contend with the myriad of issues that accompany pregnancy can make you feel anxious and apprehensive.
Almost all pregnant women would face issues like mood swings, fatigue, nausea, constipation, cramps, bloating and sleep disorders from time to time. And even though there are standard medications to cure these ailments, a pregnant woman should be extra cautious when taking over the counter medications that could potentially put her life and the life of her baby at risk.
So if you are quite apprehensive about taking medications and treatments for your pregnancy issues, here are some natural but very effective ways to combat the same.
Natural Remedies For Pregnancy Issues
Nausea And Morning Sickness
Every other woman would experience this condition during pregnancy and there are only a few very lucky ladies who stop experiencing morning sickness and nausea after the first few months (for some, the symptoms continue till the final weeks before delivery).
A very effective way to combat morning sickness is to inhale peppermint oil. You can also hold a lemon in your hands and squeeze it gently at regular intervals to inhale its juice. Another alternative would be to massage your abdomen with carrier oil mixed with other essential oils like sandalwood, fennel, lavender etc. You can also inhale these oils to combat morning sickness.
If on the other hand, you happen to suffer from sever bouts of vomiting, you can make a concoction that contains carrier oil mixed with rose or fennel oil, and a few drops of lemon juice. Massage the oil into your abdomen at regular intervals and inhale the same to curb vomiting.
Many women suffer from anemia during pregnancy. Characterized by an iron deficiency, anemia can cause dizziness, fatigue and breathlessness in women if left untreated. The best natural way to treat this pregnancy issue would be to opt for foods that contain the mineral. These include green leafy vegetables like spinach, parsley, nettle leaf tea, kelp and dandelion root. Avoid drinking coffee or other caffeinated products as they can reduce the iron content in the body and aggravate the condition.
Ask a pregnant woman about how she feels during pregnancy and the answer you would most probably get is ‘tired out’ or ‘exhausted’. Fatigue is a very common pregnancy issue in women and can lead to other conditions like depression, stress or anxiousness with time.

In order to curb the condition naturally, try using a vaporizer/burner in your room that would burn essential aromatic oils like lavender, sandalwood, neroli and chamomile to give a pleasant smell to the room as you sleep. The aromatic affects of these oils would also help your body and mind relax and so would take care of fatigue. Alternatively, you can also opt for a relaxing aromatherapy bath that would relax your senses and give your muscles a much needed boost.
Heartburn is another one of those ‘hard to deal with’ pregnancy issues and is quite common during the second trimester. The best way to deal with it is to avoid foods that could cause the condition, in addition to eating smaller, frequent meals rather than large meals. Do not drink too much water in between meals as this could also aggravate the condition. Opt for food like fennel seed tea, yogurt, butter milk or almonds to get quick relief from the condition.
Certain hormones released in a woman’s body during pregnancy relax the muscles of the digestive system and hence lead to conditions like constipation. This can cause other digestive disorders in the body with time.
A good way to curb constipation during pregnancy is to opt for unrefined foods that are easier to digest in addition to drinking plenty of water before and after meals to speed up the digestion process.
Alternatively, you can also massage aromatic oils into your lower abdomen at regular intervals (at least twice a day) to get relief from constipation and its associated symptoms.
During pregnancy, a woman would usually experience fluid retention which would lead to swollen legs and hands. This can be taken care of by massaging the hands and legs with essential aromatic oils at regular intervals.
Use firm upward strokes to massage the oils nicely into the skin. This would bring down the swelling and pain to a great extent and provide relief from fluid retention. Another way to prevent/treat fluid retention is to opt for aromatherapy baths with essential oils.
Pregnant women often find it very difficult to sleep at nights. And the issue only increases as the pregnancy progresses. In order to get relief from sleep disorders and get proper sleep at nights, it is recommended that you drink a cup of chamomile tea right before going to bed. The substances in the tea would have a relaxing effect on the brain and help you doze off peacefully.
Adding a few drops of chamomile oil to your pillow would have the same effect as chamomile tea and would lull you to sleep almost instantly. You can also ask your partner to gently massage your neck, shoulders and lower back with aromatic oils. Doing so would help your body and mind to relax and help you fall asleep in the process.
