Rhinoplasty means “nose molding” or “nose surgery.”This is a plastic surgery of the nose which is carried out to change the form of the nose. The changes can be made with the addition or removal of the bone or cartilage, graft the nose tissue or to implant the synthetic material to change the nose shape.
The procedure of rhinoplasty is carried out inside the nose. The surgeon adjusts the bone and cartilage of the nose under the skin. The surgeon may make some cut in the nostrils or septum. After making the cuts in the septum, the surgeon separates the skin from the underlying bone, cartilage or mucous membranes. The surgeon can aggrandize the nose bone or cartilage in several ways. The procedure depends upon the shape and the structure of the nose.
Any type of minor change in the shape of the nose is possible with the use of the cartilage acquired from the inside portion of the nose and the ear. In case any major change has to be made then the surgeon can take help from the implants and the technique of bone grafting. In the technique of bone grafting, a bone material is pushed into another bone to reinforce the host bone.
Procedure of Rhinoplasty
The procedure of rhinoplasty needs local or general anesthesia and the type of anesthesia to be given to the patient depends upon the complexity of the surgery and the precedence of the surgeon. A brief on type of anesthesia is given here to give you an understanding on types of anesthesia.
Local anesthesia can be used safely in the outpatient ward as it is given to a part of the body. The surgeon injects a medicine into the nasal tissues which numbs the pain of that area.
Sedative medicine is also injected with the help of intravenous (IV) line. This type of anesthesia makes you befuddled but you are not fully asleep.
General anesthesia is given to the patient by helping the person to inhale the drug or through the IV line. A catheter is placed in the vein of the hand, chest or neck. This anesthesia affects the whole body of a person and makes him/her in an unconscious state.
After giving anesthesia, the surgery is performed and after the surgery, the person has to stay in the recovery room so that the surgeon and other hospital staff can monitor the patient for any type of complications. You may need to stay for a day in a hospital and if the surgery is minor then you will be discharged after a few hours of surgery.
After the completion of the surgery you need to keep your head higher than the chest to prevent any chances of bleeding and swelling. The nose may observe some congestion as lot of cotton is placed inside the nose during the surgery. The dressing of the surgery has to be in place for a period of at least one week. Some surgeons use tape or a plaster cast to give protection and support to the new shape of the nose.
When the nurse removes the dressing after one week then mild bleeding and excretion of mucus from the nose is normal. You can keep a drip pad so that it can absorb the excretion and bleeding from the nose.
This surgery gives very minor changes to your nose but it gives a major change on the looks of the nose. Most of the time this surgery is carried out for cosmetic reasons.
