The color of the blood may be brown, pink or red. Spotting or premenstrual bleeding is one of the healthy means of giving a hint on some underlying condition.

During the ovulation period, when the egg is released, spotting may be seen. Spotting due to ovulation may occur in the early leutal phase, usually 8-10 days before menstruation.
Low Progesterone Level
Having insufficiently low level of progesterone may also be one of the reasons for spotting before period. This hormone plays a major role in leutal phase.
Before the missed period indicating pregnancy, there might be spotting if the woman is getting pregnant after ovulation. This is usually known as implantation bleeding. If the spotting is due to pregnancy, then it would be seen just one time before the menses.
Birth Control Measures
Most of the birth control methods used nowadays use the hormones that may cause impact on the uterine lining, resulting in bleeding or spotting. This type of spotting is not necessarily limited to the leutal phase and is commonly known as breakthrough bleeding. Some women may have spotting while starting or stopping a particular birth control method which may alter the hormone levels.
Spotting may also be caused by the hormonal imbalance or thyroid disorders. This is probable to happen when the body produces more eostrogen and not much of progesterone. Some medicines like aspirin may also be a reason.
Some of the genetal diseases, pelvic infections, fibroids, etc., may also result in bleeding or spotting. In this way, it can be a healthy indicator of some disease evolving in the body.
The endometrial biopsy may also cause premenstrual spotting for a first few months. In this case, it however gets to the normal condition as months pass by.
Spotting can also be a warning signal to some impending miscarriage. In some cases, it happens that miscarriage occurs even before one comes to know that she is pregnant. This is usually seen in the very early stage of pregnancy.
As mentioned above, spotting could also be an alarm to informof some underlying illness or health issue. The uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, polyps,, uterine cancer or cervical cancer could also be sometimes the reason for the spotting.
Most of the reasons for spotting before period is considered to be safe and common. But, they are surely abnormal as it is not the real menstruation bleeding. Whatever may be the reason, it is good to have a look into the abnormality to ward off any difficult health condition going to occur. Hence it is advisable to consult a doctor to be on the safer side.
