Take 50 gm of mustard seeds and grind them into fine powder. Just before the onset of periods start taking 2gm of this powder with a cup of warm milk twice a day. It is also supposed to slow down heavy bleeding during periods because it helps in decreasing the frequency of uterine contractions which leads to heavy bleeding. Either a concoction made with half tea spoon of cinnamon powder and one cup of water can be taken twice a day or cinnamon tea can be taken two three times a day.

It is believed that banana flowers increase progesterone hormone in the body and hence help in reducing excessive bleeding. Take one banana flower and boil it in plain water. Take this cooked flower with a cup of curd on the day of heavy bleeding.
Vitex is a herb easily available at herbal stores. This herb has traditionally been used in Asia for managing post partum hemorrhage among women.
Vitex contains flavnoids which stimulate production of progesterone hormone in the body which is responsible for regulating menstrual bleeding in women. Vitex supplements are also available in the form of tablets and capsules. You can take vitex supplements under the supervision of an ayurvedic practitioner.
Another effective spice against heavy bleeding, coriander seeds are easily available at grocery stores. Take 6 gm of coriander seeds and boil them with half liter of water. When the water reduces to half, remove it from fire and let it cool. You can add some sugar if you find the taste bitter. Drink the concoction when it is still warm on the day of heavy bleeding.
There are some medicines and herbs which should be avoided during heavy bleeding since they aggravate the bleeding. Aspirin is one such drug which should be avoided during periods since aspirin works as a blood thinner and prevents clotting. Similarly, ginger is also a blood thinner and should not be consumed during periods.
