In Ayurveda, there is a mention of the early stage symptoms of the disease like- accumulation of dirt on the teeth, a feeling of burning sensation on the palm and soles, stickiness of the skin all over the body, thirst and sweet taste in the mouth, polyuria. In the treatment of diabetes, turmeric is an excellent option both as a preventive as well as managing agent. Turmeric due to its Katu-Tikta rasa, ruksha and Laghu qualities effectively destroys the contaminated Kapha which is the primary culprit in the manifestation of diabetes as all these properties are antagonistic to Kapha.

Jambul fruit is regarded as a specific medicine for diabetes in Ayurveda because of its action on pancreas. The fruit and seeds are useful for the treatment of diabetes as the seeds contain the phyto-chemical jamboline which controls the excessive conversion of starch to sugar. Dry the seeds and make powder. 1 tsp of this powder must be taken twice daily with buttermilk or with plain water.

The medicinal qualities of fenugreek seeds for diabetes are described in Ayurvedic literature. It has been reported in the recent studies that decoction of fenugreek seeds suppressed the urinary excretion of sugar and relieved the symptoms of diabetes as these seeds contain an alkaloid trigonelline which is known to reduce blood sugar levels.

The seeds and fruit of this plant contain most active blood sugar lowering components known as charantin. Extract juice of 4-5 bitter gourd fruits in the morning and take on an empty stomach. Seed powder can be used either directly or in the form of decoction.

Powder of the bark of cinnamon has the ability to lower blood sugar levels by stimulating the insulin activity. Mix half teaspoon of cinnamon in a cup of warm water and drink it daily.In addition to diet, regular physical exercise improves blood glucose control and can prevent or delay the occurrence of Type 2 diabetes.
