The symptoms of genital herpes vary from person to person. Most people are not aware that they have genital herpes. However, the first outbreak can be very severe too. The first outbreak generally happens within 2 weeks of sexual contact with an infected person. In some time sores show up where the virus has entered the body like mouth, penis or vagina. They can also be visible on the cervix of women or urinary passage of men. The sores are small red bumps that may turn into blisters or painful open sores. Apart from this some people might just have mild sores like insect bites or something else.

Treatment For Genital Herpes

Genital herpes is incurable and the virus will always be in the body. There are antiviral drugs that can reduce the severity of the outbreaks. Drugs can be given right after outbreaks regularly to stop the outbreaks. This does not mean that you are free from the virus.

During the outbreaks some steps can be taken to speed the healing and not let the sores spread to other body parts. Hygiene is most important, keep the area dry and clean, and try not to touch the sores, wash hands after contact. Avoid sexual contact with partner till the sores heal.

If the outbreak is not for the first time then chances of passing the virus are very less. Babies born with herpes may be premature, have damaged brain, severe rashes, and eye problems or may even die. Doctors may go for caesarean if the mother has sores near the birth canal.  It is not yet confirmed if it is fine for the mother to take medicines for genital herpes during pregnancy.

Herpes is spread through contact with sores, so if the sores are covered and not touching the baby it’s fine.If there are sores around the nipple area then don’t breastfeed with the same breast, pump out milk instead. Also the sores should not be touched while pumping out the milk.
