The woman gets her period every month. Some common side effects of birth control pills are nausea, vomiting and breast tenderness.

The side effects vary from woman to woman. There are a number of options to choose from and you can pick one brand, which suits you, and are most comfortable with. The pill is also said to reduce cramping and heavy bleeding which makes it a good option.

The Contraceptive Patch

The contraceptive patch is a thin patch, which you put on your buttocks, arms or stomach. This patch is to be worn everyday and changed once every week. At the end of the third week, you stop taking the patch and your period returns.

The patch works in the similar fashion as the birth control pill by releasing hormones into the body to prevent a pregnancy. The patch is said to have the same side effects and can produce skin irritation.

The Vaginal Contraceptive Ring

The vaginal contraceptive ring is a thin circular ring that is inserted into your vagina for about three weeks. The doctor can easily insert it for you. After 3 weeks lapse, you can remove the ring. The vaginal ring introduces hormones into the body and prevents ovulation.

The ring is said to be uncomfortable as some women complain of feeling it. It is also said to reduce effectiveness if not worn for 3 hours. Some women also complain of less than enjoyable sex with the ring inserted in their vaginas.

The Hormone Shot

The hormone shot is an injection, which is given by the doctor. It helps to prevent a pregnancy for about 3 months. You can take the injection and enjoy hassle-free intercourse for 3 months. Women who take shots complain of weight gain, mood swings and headaches.

IUD Or Intra Uterine Device

The IUD is one of the most effective means of preventing a pregnancy. It is a small t-shaped device, which is inserted into the woman’s uterus by the doctor. There are two kinds of IUDs available, one is a copper IUD and the other is a device, which releases progesterone.

The copper IUD prevents a pregnancy for 12 years once inserted while the hormonal IUD prevents a pregnancy for 5 years. Both act as a barrier method by preventing sperm from fertilizing the egg. Cramping, pain, heavy periods, irregular periods and spotting in between periods are some of the common side effects. There is also a risk of infection.
