Let us know about some of the possible causes of hair loss in women.
8 Possible Causes Of Hair Loss In Women:
Usually temporary hair loss in women is caused due to severe stress whether it is physical or emotional. Telogen effluvium is the medical term used to denote hair loss caused due to stress. Examples of severe stress include severe illness, loss of a beloved one, surgeries, strenuous training, tough and strenuous sports, drastic weight loss, and emotional stress.
When you are in severe and prolonged stress, your body system causes large numbers of hairs to get into the resting phage. And when your hairs enter the resting phase, they gradually fall off after a few months. You should not worry about this kind of hair loss as it is a temporary condition and you will get back new hair growth after a few months of recovering from stress.
2) Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
This syndrome is another possible cause of hair loss in women. When there is an imbalance of female sex hormones, several changes can occur in the body ranging from the development of ovarian cysts, infertility, and changes in the menstrual cycle, skin changes, which may include hair loss too.
If you consult your doctor for the hair loss caused due to this reason then he/she can help you by prescribing some medications including anti-androgen medications, progesterone pills, metformin or birth control pills.
3) Thyroid Disorders
The thyroid gland is an important gland in the human body that greatly contributes in several metabolic processes taking place. Therefore, if something goes wrong with this gland, its effects can be seen on the body. Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism are the two common problems related to the thyroid disorders.
In case of hypothyroidism, the thyroid produces very less amount of thyroid hormones whereas in case of hyperthyroidism condition, excess amount of these hormones are produced. Apart from causing other symptoms, these disorders can also cause hair loss in women.
4) Skin Conditions
Certain skin conditions can also be responsible for causing hair loss in women. Skin conditions are usually visible and can be recognized comparatively easily by the sufferers. When skin conditions are the causes of the hair loss, women experience double pain. This is because hair loss gives them emotional disturbances whereas skin conditions usually give them physical pain and ruin their beauty as well.
Psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis are the two common skin conditions that cause hair loss in women. Psoriasis is a condition in which the skin cells grow very quickly. As a result, thick patches develop on the skin, which results in hair loss. Seborrheic dermatitis is a severe condition of skin in which reddish or yellowish greasy scaling occurs on the scalp. This gives rise to hair loss in women. This condition may also affect other skin areas with hair growth.
5) Hormonal Changes
Heredity and hormonal changes can also result in hair loss in women. The two factors usually result in special type of hair loss pattern called alopecia. Although, the older women are the usual victims of this type of hair loss, even young women, who are 25 to 30 years of age, can be affected by alopecia. This type of hair loss is generally referred to as the female pattern baldness.
Female pattern baldness accounts for at least 50% permanent hair loss in women. As women age, the replacement hairs become increasingly shorter and finer, which soon becomes transparent. If you notice hair loss at the area where you part your hair or on the top of your hair then you should consult your doctor as this type of hair loss is permanent and is caused due to hormonal changes and heredity.
6) Hair Products
Most women use various hair products to enhance the beauty of their hair. But you should be aware of the fact that most hair products contain harmful chemicals that may trigger loss of hair. Chemicals used for bleaching, perming, coloring, and straightening hair are capable of causing great damage to the hair follicles, which in turn, may result in permanent hair loss.
If damage caused by the hair products is mild then hair breakage and hair damage can occur. Some women use hairstyles that pull hair tightly in the backward direction. This can also cause hair loss.
7) Poor Diet And Nutrition
Poor nutrition and inadequate diet are the other possible causes of hair loss in women. Major parts of the female population, who suffer from hair loss due to poor and inadequate nutrition, belong to the poor family. But these days, even the elite women may lack in nutrition and adequate diet.
This is usually because they go for crash dieting for the sake of losing weight and attaining slim body figure. But in this attempt, they do not obtain the vital nutrients necessary for the growth of hair. As a result, they may suffer from hair loss. The essential nutrients for hair include protein, iron, Vitamin E and Vitamin C.
When chemotherapy is administered to women, who suffer from cancer, total hair loss may occur in them. This is because drugs administered for killing the cancer cells also poison the hair roots and the hair follicles. The most common area affected by chemotherapy includes the hair on the head.
Chemotherapy makes the scalp tender and hence the new hair that is still in its growth phase, turns dry and brittle. Usually, hair loss can be seen after 2 to 3 weeks of the first dose of chemotherapy. Complete hair loss may occur after 1 to 2 months of the first dose of the treatment. In case of hair loss caused due to chemotherapy, hair often grows back 3 to 4 month after the last dose of chemotherapy treatment.
