Breast tenderness is a frequently occurring complication among women. It is characterized with a feeling of pain or soreness in the area around the breasts. The level of discomfort on occasion of breast tenderness is extremely variable and its intensity varies from person to person. There are quite a lot of reasons as well which give rise to breast tenderness.

The accurate area of the breast where the patient feels tenderness is also not fixed at all. Sometimes it might be localized to the nipples, sometimes it can spread all over the glandular parts and sometimes it may include the whole of the breast.

Causes Of Breast Tenderness

As it has been already remarked, the causes of breast tenderness are manifold. While sometimes the nature of breast tenderness might indicate a nascent hormonal transformation, at other times it might pin point towards the growth of malignant lumps and tumors. So, it is vital to know the accurate triggers that lead to breast tenderness.

Dietary Factors

Sometimes a particular diet or a specific food or even a drastic change in the food habit can lead to breast tenderness. Women, who consume a lot of caffeinated drinks, are more vulnerable to breast tenderness.

Women, who consume birth control pills on a regular basis and for quite a long time, are also more susceptible to breast tenderness. The estrogen products found in most birth control pills hamper with the internal mechanism and lead to breast tenderness as a possible symptom.

Physical Factors

Some dominant physical factors are also associated with breast tenderness. The most common one among them is the feminine menstrual cycle. This phase is associated with the sudden rise in the level of estrogen inside the body. This leads to the temporary enlargement of the breast ducts. During the later parts of the menstrual cycle the progesterone level perks up and stimulates the milk glands. These internal changes lead to breast tenderness.

Breast tenderness is also an associated symptom of the commencement of the lactation period among new mothers. The hormonal changes that cause breast tenderness during this phase are similar to that of the menstrual cycle. But now things aggravate further, characterized by secretion of milk from the mammary glands. The intensity of breast tenderness during this physical condition is much intensified.

An early stage of pregnancy is also associated with breast tenderness. The mechanism of the internal hormones in the body of a woman is marked with the spurring of estrogen level. Thus, it creates contraction and relaxation in the mammary glands and breast tissues, leading to breast tenderness.

Medical Factors

Some primary as well as secondary, life threatening factors are also conducive of breast tenderness. Among the primary factors are growth of benign tumors, breast inflammation, breast abscess and fibrocystic breast disease. The secondary factors include lethal conditions, such as breast cancer, malignant breast tumor and ectopic pregnancy. These factors need immediate medical attention and subsequent medication.
