Cramps during pregnancy are a matter of concern for a pregnant woman. Cramps can be mild or severe. They can be a sign of a problem or just indicates that your uterus is expanding. Lower abdominal cramps are normal during pregnancy as when the baby grows the uterus grows and a pain is felt which is known as round ligament pain.
It causes pain especially in situations when you take different positions while sitting or sleeping. Though it is normal but if you want to have some relief from it you should resist the physical activity and avoid the positions that induce pain. Taking a warm bath and stretching your body will ease some of your cramping pain.
You don’t need to get worried unless and until the pain becomes constant, severe and any kind of bleeding occurs. Some of the causes of cramps during early and late pregnancy are explained below:
Possible Causes of Cramps During Early Pregnancy
Implantation occurs usually after 8-10 days of ovulation cycle and a few women feels cramps during this time. But if you have a positive pregnancy test then it should not occur at this stage. Some women experience cramping first and then they realize that they are pregnant.
Mild cramps come up as a result of the expansion in the uterus. When the baby grows inside the stomach the uterus expands and the ligaments that support the uterus observe a mild pain. This type of cramps is due to the stretching of the uterus.
When cramping is accompanied by spots of blood or bleeding then it is the sign of a possible miscarriage. So the advice of a doctor should be taken immediately in these types of cases.
Sometimes cramping can be a sign of Ectopic pregnancy which is a serious condition and needs immediate medical advice. The initial signs of an ectopic pregnancy are cramping and abdominal pain on one side of the stomach and bleeding or spotting.
Constipation or Gas Pains
Some women face cramps due to constipation and gas in the stomach. The digestive system loses its strength to digest all the foods that you eat before your pregnancy. So take care and do not eat such things that give rise to constipation and acidity in the stomach.
Possible Causes of Cramps During Late Pregnancy
Round Ligament Pain
During the second and third trimester of pregnancy the women feel round ligament pain which increases the cramps. In the early pregnancy the uterus expands but in the late pregnancy it continues to expand so much that the ligaments of the uterus stretches and cramping starts.
Preterm labor is a term used to define that labor comes before the time.Mild or severe cramps indicates that preterm labor starts. In this situation cramping is accompanied with severe diarrhea and back pain.
Braxton Hicks Contractions
Braxton Hicks contractions are the contractions that a female observe and that are not regular but intermittent. These contractions occur in the second and third trimester which increases the cramps.
When the pregnant woman enters into labor she starts feeling back pain and labor camps. As it is difficult to differentiate between the cramps that are an indication of damage and that are normal so medical guidance should be followed.
