Causes Of Spotting During Pregnancy

Ectopic pregnancy

Ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy in which the fertilized egg gets connected to the uterus lining and it leads to bleeding. If the bleeding is caused due to ectopic pregnancy then it shows dizziness and pain in the lower abdomen. If the pain is severe and bleeding continues then the case calls for an emergency.


Implantation bleeding is bleeding which occurs when the egg passes through the lining of the uterus. At the time when the implantation of the egg occurs, it leads to slight bleeding. This bleeding can be of brown color which occurs at the time of implantation or after passing of a few days of the egg implantation.

Spotting after Intercourse

In some cases spotting occurs after intercourse. The blood supply of the cervix increases during pregnancy and any type of sexual activity irritates the cervix and mild bleeding occurs. In such cases you should convey the nurse that bleeding occurs after intercourse. This is the reason that intercourse is not suggested during the first trimester of pregnancy.

A Pap smear test or internal examination by the gynecologist may lead to spotting. In this case there is no need to worry till the spotting increase and bleeding starts. Though it is difficult to trace the exact cause of spotting but doctor advises you not to lift heavy objects and avoid exercise.

Vaginal Infections

Sometimes spotting is not at all related to pregnancy. It could be caused by any type of bacterial or yeast infection. The cervix becomes irritated and inflammation occurs in the cervix which leads to spotting.

Premature Labor or Abnormal Placental Conditions

If the problem of spotting occurs in the 2nd or 3rd trimester of pregnancy then it could be a sign of some pregnancy complications like Placental abruption, Placenta previa, Premature labor and late miscarriage. These types of complications call for a medical emergency and medical guidance should be followed as soon as possible in such cases.

It should be kept in mind that bleeding during pregnancy is not a normal thing but in some females it occurs in the first trimester of pregnancy. Spotting becomes a cause of concern if bleeding occurs after spotting, contact your gynecologist at the earliest so that she can handle the problem and save it from becoming worse which may lead to a miscarriage.

The problem of miscarriage is faced in around 20-30% of women which is very unfortunate. Light bleeding and spotting is the initial sign of miscarriage but it is also characterized by the absence of other symptoms of pregnancy and cramps. Some women who have been spotting in the first trimester passes through a healthy pregnancy with the birth of a healthy child.
