Ovarian cysts are sacs filled with fluid that grow on the ovaries or around it. All ovarian cysts need not necessarily be painful. But certain cysts can wreak havoc and cause a lot of pain for women.
Cysts like endometriomas, dermoid cysts and cystadenomas cause a lot of pain which can be felt in the lower abdomen, lower back, pelvic region, legs etc. The pain could become particularly worse during sexual intercourse or menstruation.
There are several ways to control the pain of ovarian cysts like diet control, exercise, medication etc. Here, we have discussed some of the methods that can be used for relieving pain caused by ovarian cysts.
Effective Methods For Relieving Ovarian Cyst Pain
Application of heat on the area of pain can offer great relief in most cases. For this purpose, you can use a heat pack in medium setting or place a hot towel dipped in hot water on the affected area after wringing it dry. Taking a warm bath too helps. Fill your tub with warm water and soak in this water for half an hour for best results.
Wear Loose Clothes
As ovarian cysts can cause abdominal pressure and bloating, wearing tight clothes will only lead to a lot of discomfort and pain. Wear loose fitting clothes that do not cause any pressure on the affected area.
Avoid Heavy Jobs
Ovarian cysts stand the chance of bursting or getting twisted. Undertaking strenuous jobs can be very dangerous as it can also displace other organs and hence is not recommended.
Activities like jumping, running, skipping etc. cause a lot of impact on the body and lead to increased pain. Therefore, try and avoid such activities to keep the cysts from bursting and causing great pain. This is especially important if the cyst is big.
Taking spicy food can aggravate ovarian cysts and can cause the pain to worsen as well. It is important to watch what you eat as food such as red meat which is high in hormone content can cause a lot of trouble with ovarian cysts.
However, they too have certain risks and side effects associated with them. Talk to a doctor before taking pills and assess the risks and benefits to see if the benefits outweigh the risks.
Though surgery is normally not suggested as a possible treatment method for ovarian cysts, sometimes surgery is the only option. Surgery is done when the cyst is very big and causes a lot of pain that the patient finds it difficult to lead a normal life. In such cases, the cysts are removed through laparoscopy which is a minimally invasive procedure or through a laparotomy.
