Acne is a disorder of the hair follicles and the sebaceous glands. Usually the acne breakout occurs at the age of puberty in both men and women. This problem takes a worse situation in people who have oily skin. It is more common on face, neck, chest, shoulders and back. Some acne gets healed up very quickly while some takes lot of time and leave a scar also. The scars take some time to fade.
The problem of acne lowers the self esteem of a person and sometimes the person falls into depression as acne vulgaris on the whole face gives an ugly look to the person. Acne is characterized by several signs and symptoms but the most common sign of acne is presence of whitehead and blackhead on the face. Both these are type of mild acne. If the infection goes on increasing then they become more serious types of acne called by different names like papules, nodules and cyst.
The emergence of acne is due to the disorder of the pilosebaceuos gland which leads to the occurrence of some types of lesions on the skin. Some of the common signs and symptoms of acne are the presence of the following types of acne on the skin.
Signs & Symptoms of Acne
Acne falls mainly into two categories –inflamed acne and non-inflamed acne. Both these categories explain the symptoms of acne one by one.
Non–inflamed acne are the acne which comes out of the skin but does not lead to the inflammation on the skin. Whiteheads and blackheads are two non-inflammatory acne which are developed when the hair follicles of the skin becomes clogged due to oil secretions, dead skin cells and presence of bacteria on the skin.
Blackheads are open pores and they give a darkish appearance of the skin in the hair follicles while whiteheads are closed pores which are slightly raised from the skin and mostly they are of skin color.
The acne which leads to inflammation of the skin is known as inflammatory acne. The following types of acne come under inflammatory acne:
Papules are slightly raised bumps on the skin that shows inflammation and infection in the hair follicles. They are of red in color and are tender.
This type of acne contains white pus in it and usually is of red in color.
Nodules are bigger and painful lumps on the skin which are formed due to excessive oil secretion beneath the skin surface within the hair follicles.
Cysts are also bigger and painful lumps but they are filled with pus and can lead to the emergence of scars on the skin if not treated on time.
Most of the people suffering from acne have to deal with the problem of pigmentation and scarring also. Several types of discolored, darkened, red spots can occur on the acne affected skin. These types of spots continue to stay on your skin even after the breakout has been fully healed.The chances of scar are higher when the acne vulgaris is severe.
