Six Major Symptoms Of Intestinal Disease

Six Major Symptoms Of Intestinal Disease Intestinal disease can be described as a disease which affects a person’s intestines. There are various reasons for having intestinal diseases, but the primary one is the bowel infection. IBD or intestinal bowel disease covers a wide range of intestinal diseases caused due to inflammation.

This causes redness and inflammation of the big or small intestines. There are primarily two major types of diseases under IBD: one is ulcerative colitis and the other is known as Crohn’s disease. Usually these diseases follow a wave curve wherein the symptoms can be observed during their flaring periods and disappear during remission. Therefore, these are termed as chronic diseases. Here are the six major symptoms of intestinal disease:

Signs & Symptoms of Intestinal Disease

Profuse Bleeding

Profuse bleeding is one of the major symptoms of the presence of ulcers in the intestine. The ulcers can be big or small. This condition can also vary from the extent of bearable to extremely painful. The bleeding occurs from the ulcers. It can also occur due to the bowel being ruptured or perforated. Bloody stools are also a strong indication of intestinal disease.

This is commonly suffered by persons with Crohn’s disease. Strictures is basically the narrowing down of the intestines. Endoscopy or surgery is generally recommended to remove the strictures if they are fibrotic. This is because fibrotic strictures cause obstructions. In case of ulcerative colitis, strictures may be malignant which means that they may be cancerous. Severe abdominal pain is a major symptom of strictures.

Perianal Disease

Some of the major perianal complications include fissures, abscesses, fistulas and stenosis etc. with which most of the patients are affected if they are suffering from Crohn’s disease. This disease usually occurs in a person with Crohn’s disease.

It keeps re-appearing. There is always a high risk of its reoccurrence. More often, it needs to be surgically removed for permanent cure. Regular check ups of a person with crohn’s disease help in early diagnosis of this disease.

This is the abnormal narrowing of the intestine. It is caused because of inflammation and can be diagnosed by the sound made by blood overflowing the narrowed walls. A person suffering from this condition may feel acute pain in the abdomen.

Toxic Megacolon

This is a life threatening disease which causes acute dilation of the large intestinewhich is the colon. The widening of the colon can occur anywhere from 1-10 days.

It causes fever, increased heart rate and acute abdominal pain. However, this condition is found to be comparatively rare.

If a person suffering from ulcerative colitis has ulcers for a long period of time, it can be a symptom of colon cancer. This cancer doesn’t show any major signs and can only be diagnosed upon medical examination of the patient.

These are the various symptoms which tell about the presence of different intestinal diseases. Some of the most common include abdominal pain, fever, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal tenderness, bleeding in stools etc. Intestinal diseases are frequent, but many a times the symptoms go unnoticed. Thus, it is very important to get medical check ups done at regular intervals.
