Diabetes mellitus has gained gigantic disgrace in recent times as it is fast becoming the world’s largest silent killer. India is being estimated with fastest growing population of Diabetics. It is a metabolic disorder that results in deficiency of the insulin production. The preventive measures in Ayurveda can prevent the disease. The main causative factor of the disease is the sedentary lifestyle and wrong eating habits. In Ayurveda, it is described as Pramaha, which can be managed conservatively with diet, exercise and internal medication. If an individual sticks to Ayurvedic preventive strategy right from the beginning, one can easily prevent this disease and can control it if already suffering.
It is a medical condition in which there is accumulation of glucose in the blood and urine of the patient. This condition is known as Hyperglycemia. Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder which is caused by the malfunctioning of the pancreas, which is responsible for the production of insulin hormone.
Home Remedies For Diabetes:
Ayurvedic home remedies for the diabetes are the oldest among the available therapies which are mentioned in “Premeha” category in the ancient Ayurvedic texts. In Ayurveda, there is a mention of the early stage symptoms of the disease like- accumulation of dirt on the teeth, a feeling of burning sensation on the palm and soles, stickiness of the skin all over the body, thirst and sweet taste in the mouth, polyuria. These are some of the initial stage symptoms of diabetes as described in Ayurveda. The main causes of diabetes are- sleeping in the day time, laziness, sedentary lifestyle, consumption of the food items which are heavy, sweet, unctuous, cold, hereditary etc.
There are many herbs which have the potential to manage diabetes, but nothing in comparison to turmeric. Turmeric is the herb of choice in effectively tackling diabetes and urinary tract disorders. In the treatment of diabetes, turmeric is an excellent option both as a preventive as well as managing agent. Turmeric due to its Katu-Tikta rasa, ruksha and Laghu qualities effectively destroys the contaminated Kapha which is the primary culprit in the manifestation of diabetes as all these properties are antagonistic to Kapha.
Jambul fruit is regarded as a specific medicine for diabetes in Ayurveda because of its action on pancreas. The fruit and seeds are useful for the treatment of diabetes as the seeds contain the phyto-chemical jamboline which controls the excessive conversion of starch to sugar. Dry the seeds and make powder. 1 tsp of this powder must be taken twice daily with buttermilk or with plain water.
3. Fenugreek Seeds
The medicinal qualities of fenugreek seeds for diabetes are described in Ayurvedic literature. It has been reported in the recent studies that decoction of fenugreek seeds suppressed the urinary excretion of sugar and relieved the symptoms of diabetes as these seeds contain an alkaloid trigonelline which is known to reduce blood sugar levels.
4. Bitter Gourd
The seeds and fruit of this plant contain most active blood sugar lowering components known as charantin. Extract juice of 4-5 bitter gourd fruits in the morning and take on an empty stomach. Seed powder can be used either directly or in the form of decoction.
5. Azadirachta Indica
Neem is an age-old remedy and easily available anywhere. Taking juice of neem leaves can be taken internally to lower the blood sugar.
6. Aegle Marmelos
The leaves of this plant are very effective in lowering blood sugar levels. Drink juice of fresh leaves daily along with the pinch of black pepper. This remedy will take care of the excess body sugar.
Powder of the bark of cinnamon has the ability to lower blood sugar levels by stimulating the insulin activity. Mix half teaspoon of cinnamon in a cup of warm water and drink it daily.In addition to diet, regular physical exercise improves blood glucose control and can prevent or delay the occurrence of Type 2 diabetes. Other benefits of physical exercise are control of blood pressure, lipid, cardiovascular events and quality of life. For people with diabetes, daily walk, light exercises and pranayama is highly recommended.
