When the skin is cut or wounded it heals to form a scar. New scars that have been formed are full of blood vessels. Gradually with time, the supply of blood to these scar tissues decreases which is why they leave prominent and tell tale marks on the skin.
This happens due to reduced blood supply. Scar tissue if left on its own heals by itself. However there are some things you can do to speed up healing. While nature takes its own course, these simple home remedies can help to speed up healing of the scar.
Effective Home Remedies For Scars
Calendula Gel
Calendula gel available at leading chemists can help to heal a scar. If first applied to the scar, it reduces skin inflammation and forces the new tissue to erupt. Try to apply the gel twice a day for the first one week.
Mustard Oil
Massaging the scar tissue with mustard oil thrice a day is said to visibly reduce the appearance of the scar. Use authentic mustard oil extracted from mustard seeds and not store brought ones.
Lemon Juice
Good old lemon juice has been used since time immemorial as a bleaching agent on the face and also to reduce the appearance of scars.
Apply the lemon juice on the affected area of the skin twice a day with a piece of cotton wool gently dipped in the lemon juice.
Baking Soda
Baking soda has often been used in microdermabrasion treatments to remove dead skin cells and lighten the tone of the skin. Mix the baking soda with a teaspoon of water till it forms a smooth paste. Now rub this paste on the scar tissues and massage the area in slow, circular movements.
Now rinse off the baking soda with plain water after massaging for 6 seconds. This should help the scar to lighten and disappear after a few weeks. You may have to do the treatment once daily for improved and faster results.
Olive Oil
You can follow up the baking soda treatment with application of olive oil.
Olive oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids that speeds up skin healing and gives the skin a plump and soft texture. It also makes the scar tissue more elastic and supple.
