Various Sinus Cancer Treatment

Sinus Cancer

Sinus Cancer Sinus cancers are a rare type of cancer that affects people mainly due to external and environmental factors. This type of cancer attacks the sinuses located in the nasal cavity. However, Squamous Cell Carcinomas is the most common type of nasal cancer that is found in humans. They affect the skin tissues and arise mainly due to smoking of tobacco and long term exposure to substances like dusts and chemical fumes.

They primarily appear as a cold or chronic sinus infection in the first stages and hence are difficult to detect. The patient may experience blocked nose, frequent nose bleeds or continuous nasal drainage. However as any other cancer, it is extremely dangerous and fatal; hence it is absolutely necessary to treat it as soon as possible. Here are the common methods that are used to treat sinus cancer depending on the stage of identification.

Sinus Cancer Treatment

For any type of nasal cavity cancer, surgery is of utmost importance. The main goal should be removal of the entire malignant tumor along with some good tissues all the time leaving the vital parts unharmed. The normal tissues are further diagnosed under a microscope to check whether the edges contain some cancerous cells.

Sinus Cancer Surgery

If the tissues are clean then it means that no cancerous cells were left behind and the surgery was successful. If there are few signs of cancerous cell then it means that it wasn’t properly removed and it often calls for a further surgery or radiation.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation Therapy

It basically uses high radiation to bombard against the cancer cells and destroy them. Most of the time it is the only method used to remove the affected area as it can do so with minimal facial changes. It is also necessary if the cancer spreads to the brain or spinal cord where surgical removal is impossible.

Targeted Therapy

Targeted therapy is a more precise form of treatment than chemotherapy as the drugs used attack the target cells instead of a wide range of good and bad ones at the same time. It even discounts on the side effects that are large in case of a chemo. Target therapy use a drug called Cetuximab which is a monoclonal antibody that attacks the protein EGFR responsible for cellular division.

Doctors rely upon chemotherapy when the cancer has reached a certain level when surgery is no longer an option, or when the cancer has spread to a large area and attacked vital organs which cannot be surgically removed.

Chemotherapy deploys the use of anti cancer drugs that spread throughout the body via blood stream and render the process useful. Often two or more drugs are used in combination for better purpose. They work by destroying fast multiplying cells that have the characteristics of cancerous cells.

Palliative Treatment

Palliative treatment basically involves treatment outside the operation theatre environment. Apart from the medical diagnosis, it is also important for a patient to lead a quality life under surveillance to curb cancer development as much as possible. Eating proper diet, living in cleaner and safer environment can indeed lower the rate of symptom appearance.
